While living in Lisbon, I stayed in a lovely third-story flat with beautiful French doors and a Juliet balcony overlooking the lively street below. However, the dark horse standout feature of the flat was in fact the traditionally tiled bathroom. Simple and unfussy but bright, it included a large window with dark shutters. One afternoon, while cooling down from the summer heat, I was transfixed by the sudden appearance of a softly lit and blurry siren in the open window.
